New Alexandria Lions Club has kicked off their annual demolition derbies last night, starting with a bang! Its always a blast to be a spectator of this crash fest, but I got the privilege to be on their video crew for this year. This grants me access to any part of their arena! So with my camera in my hand, I will be scaling the grounds to get some pictures of the area. If anything good comes up, I have permission to post a few pics here. That is their motto, and they sure live up to it. Lions Clubs of the world are all non-profit organizations created to better their local communities and help fight blindness. They refer to themselves as “Knights of the Blind.” The New Alexandria dispatch of this group has done many things for their community such as creating a Lions Care-A-Van that provides sight screenings at many local functions. New Alexandria Annual Demolition Derby

What started out as a bunch of events combined, it has since evolved into one of the best places for demolition derbies in Western Pennsylvania. The arena consists of a mud pit that is squared off by a perimeter of tires. This arena is pretty large, and can hold many cars to do battle in. Spectators have commented and said that this is truly one of the best derbies in the area. People from all over, not just PA, have came and competed to become the New Alexandria Champion.

The picture above shows the “Drivers Meeting.” It also shows how much of a turn out they get in New Alex. The officials are all well trained in what they do, and have assembled a great rule system to provide the public with a amazing spectacle. With a rigorous pre-inspection of every car, they cacth most cheaters before they make it to the arena. Rules like “Sandbagging” help to keep the action going, as this forces the people to make hits and not drive around. The New Alex officials are all very dedicated in what they do, and they do it all for free. Not one person working at the derbies are paid, its all volunteer work.

In the above image, you can see the crowd taking cover. You may be wondering why? Well, one of the most loved things about the derbies is the MUD. You are right in on the action, so when a car comes flying by, or gets stuck spinning tire in your corner, mud gets throw out and into the stands. This is when either people all duck and cover, or erect a wall of plastic to shield them. Overall it may seem kind of gross to some people, but it really adds to the experience. If you don’t want to get a little dirty, it is advised you bring a old blanket or plastic sheet to protect yourself.:D
